Pets & Rugs -- February 18th, 2008

When Fido has an accident on your hand made rug, it is not only aggravating but the urine often leaves behind an unpleasant smell in your home. To make matters worse, pets will re-soil areas where they have previously used because they smell themselves and consider that marked territory a potty zone. It is very important to clean the odor and the cause of the odor as soon as possible. Pets have a much keener sense of smell than we humans, therefore odors must be neutralized, not just deodorized. When trying to remove odors from your area rug it is important that you don't use chemicals for a couple of important reasons:

  1. Number one is that you don't know how the chemicals will interact with the dyes in your rug. We often see rugs where the color has literally been stripped out of a rug where the chemical was applied.
  2. The other reason is cleaning products often contain ammonia which smells like urine to pets.

We recommend that you use a natural enzyme treatment to help eliminate the odor until you can have the rug professionally cleaned. Nature's Miracle is a consumer enzyme product available at most pet stores. We offer an enzyme service as one of our wash processes here at the shop as well. It goes on wet over the entire rug and works to breakdown the odor causing bacteria to remove the smell. Unfortunately, we can't guarantee that if the urine caused a stain that we will be able to remove it completely. However, the enzyme process is a good treatment to remove the unpleasant smell.

If you have any questions about this process or other rug/pet related questions, please don't hesitate to give us a call at 858-566-3833.
